Student assaulted, robbed in Stadium Village

A man allegedly punched the student in the face and stole his backpack, laptop and wallet.

A University of Minnesota student was assaulted and robbed Wednesday night while walking home in Stadium Village, according to a Minneapolis police report.

University Police Chief Greg Hestness sent a crime alert to students, faculty and staff on Thursday. It is the ninth alert sent so far this semester, documenting 14 violent crimes.

The student was walking near Essex and Ontario Streets Southeast around 9 p.m. when a man approached and punched the student in the face, knocking him unconscious and stealing his backpack, laptop and wallet, according to the report.

The student came to and called police at about 10:40 p.m., the alert said. Police were unable to find a suspect, partly because of delayed reporting of the incident, according to the alert.

In the week and a half since University President Eric Kaler promised stronger campus safety measures, the alert said, University police officers have worked more than 100 hours overtime.

With the Minneapolis police, University police have helped make seven arrests in two different incidents, according to the crime alert.

Boynton Health Service announced Thursday that it would step up Gopher Chauffeur coverage, expanding its service to Thursday nights.
