Eye on Sochi: USA beats Sweden, advances to final

The U.S. women’s hockey team will face Canada, which defeated the U.S. earlier in the Olympics.

The U.S. women’s hockey team guaranteed itself at least a silver medal early Monday morning with a 6-1 win over Sweden in the semifinals.

Team USA dominated Sweden up and down the ice and grossly outshot the Swedes 70-9 in the semifinal win.

Former Gophers defenseman Megan Bozek lit the lamp once and added two assists.

Her former teammate, Gophers forward Amanda Kessel, added a goal and an assist of her own.

Gigi Marvin, who also played at Minnesota, added an assist.

The Americans will now gear up to play Canada in the gold-medal game on Thursday at 11 a.m.

The two teams met earlier in the Olympics, when Canada came out on top 3-2. In that game, the Canadians scored all of their goals in the third period.

The U.S. and Canada met in the final of the 2010 Olympics.

Canada took home the gold medal with a 2-0 win.

In fact, the two countries have won every gold medal since women’s hockey was introduced to Olympic competition in 1998.

Team USA won the gold medal in 1998, and Canada has won every gold medal since.

The matchup on Thursday will be a rematch of the 1998, 2002 and 2010 gold-medal games.
