Stangler, Sintjago win campus elections

Joelle Stangler will be the 2014-15 undergraduate student body president and Alfonso Sintjago will be the graduate student body president.

On Friday night, University of Minnesota students chose Joelle Stangler as the 2014-15 undergraduate student body president and Alfonso Sintjago as the next graduate and professional student body president.

Stangler, current intern coordinator for the Minnesota Student Association and a representative to the Board of Regents, will lead MSA along with her vice president, John Reichl. The pair swept the election with 75.8 percent of the vote.

Sintjago, current executive vice president of the Graduate and Professional Student Assembly, earned 52.5 percent of the vote. He narrowly beat out Council of Graduate Students Vice President of University Relations Scott Petty, who received 45.6 percent of the vote.

Both elections continued a trend of low voter turnout.

This year, 11 percent of graduate and professional students turned out to vote, compared to about 7 percent last year. Undergraduate voter turnout was much higher last year — about 15 percent — but dipped to about 11 percent this year.

Last week’s vote also elected dozens of student senators, who will represent many University programs in the University Senate.
