U selects new police chief

The University of Minnesota Police Department will be headed by Minneapolis’ assistant Chief of Police.

A new Chief of Police will run the University of Minnesota’s police department, the school announced in a press release Tuesday.

Matthew Clark has been a member of the Minneapolis Police Department since 1993, where he has served as the department’s Assistant Chief of Police since 2012.

“Matt brings more than two decades in law enforcement, comprehensive leadership experience, and a unique perspective of the University of Minnesota,” said Vice President for University Services Pamela Wheelock in the press release.

Clark will begin leading the Twin Cities’ campus police department on July 6. He’ll also lead the system-wide Public Safety Emergency Communications Center.

“I believe his background in community-based policing and stakeholder relations will be key to his success in this high-profile, critically important position,” Wheelock said in an email sent to University students, staff and faculty.

The University chose Clark from four finalists after it began its search for the new police chief following current UMPD chief Greg Hestness’s announcement of his retirement in October.

Hestness will retire in June after 12 years with UMPD.
