Dinky shooting of two Muslim men may be ‘bias-motivated’

A shooting that injured two Muslim men early Wednesday morning in the Dinkytown area will be investigated as a possible “bias-motivated crime,” according to the Minneapolis Police Department.

At about 2:30 a.m. Wednesday, two victims were shot near the intersection of 14th Avenue Southeast and Sixth Street Southeast, about one block from the University of Minnesota.

In the attack, an assailant allegedly made disparaging remarks about Muslims before firing at five men dressed in Islamic attire, according to a campus-wide public safety update issued Friday afternoon.

The two victims — who suffered non-life-threatening injuries — are not affiliated with the University, according to a Neighborhood Safety Notice issued Wednesday afternoon.

In Friday’s notice, Vice President for Equity and Diversity Katrice Albert condemned the attack and anti-Muslim rhetoric or actions.

“The violence earlier this week is deeply troubling,” she said in the campus-wide email. “We will continue to stand with the Muslim community, our Muslim students, faculty, and staff, and with all who make up the rich diversity that is the University community.”

Those with information about the shooting are encouraged to contact Minneapolis police at 612-692-8477.
