Three incumbents, including council president, unseated on Minneapolis City Council

Minneapolis City Council President Barb Johnson was unseated by Phillipe Cunningham.

Once all votes were tallied Wednesday afternoon, a slate of newcomers emerged victorious over incumbent Minneapolis city council members.

Incumbent Council President Barbara Johnson, Ward 5 City Council Member Blong Yang and Ward 11 City Council Member John Quincy were all defeated in their contests. 

See how each city council race finished below.

Ward 1 (Columbia Park, Windom Park, Como)

Incumbent Ward 1 City Council Member Kevin Reich defeated Jillia Pessenda for another term. Reich won in the second round of tallying after leading the first round on Tuesday night. 

Ward 2 (Como, Prospect Park, UMN)

Incumbent Ward 2 City Council Member Cam Gordon was re-elected with 5,912 votes on Tuesday night, running unopposed. 

Ward 3 (North Loop, Marcy-Holmes, St. Anthony West)

Steve Fletcher was elected to Ward 3 City Council in the third round of tallying. Fletcher trailed candidate Ginger Jentzen in the first round Tuesday night with 2,709 first-choice votes to Jentzen’s 3,297. Fletcher finished with 4,861 votes after second-choice votes for eliminated candidates had been tallied. The Ward 3 city council seat was vacated by Jacob Frey, who was elected mayor Wendesday. 

Ward 4 (Folwell, McKinney, Victory)

Phillipe M. Cunningham defeated incumbent Ward 4 City Council Member and Council President Barbara Johnson with 2,605 votes after the second round of tallying. Cunningham trailed Johnson in the first round Tuesday night. 

Ward 5 (North Loop, Hawthorne, Jordan)

Jeremiah Ellison defeated incumbent Ward 5 City Council Member Blong Yang with a total of 2,313 votes in the second round of tallying. Yang trailed behind Ellison in the first round of voting Tuesday night. 

Ward 6 (Cedar-Riverside, Ventura Village, Seward)

Incumbent Ward 6 City Council Member Abdi Warsame defeated Mohamud Noor Tuesday night, earning just over 50 percent of first-choice votes over Noor’s 47 percent. 

Ward 7 (Lowry Hill, Kenwood, Loring Park)

Incumbent Ward 7 City Council Member Lisa Goodman won re-election in the first round of voting Tuesday night with 4,742 first-choice votes, which was more than 50 percent of first-choice votes. 

Ward 8 (King Field, Bryant, Regina)

Andrea Jenkins was elected to the Ward 8 City Council seat Tuesday night after earning 5,762 first-choice votes. Incumbent Ward 8 City Council Member Elizabeth Glidden did not seek re-election. 

Ward 9 (East Phillips, Corcoran, Powderhorn Park)

Incumbent Ward 9 City Council Member Alondra Cano won re-election after the second round of vote tallying, winning a total of 2,982 votes. 

Ward 10 (Whittier, East Harriet, ECCO)

Incumbent Ward 10 City Council Member Lisa Bender was re-elected Tuesday night in the first round of vote tallying. Bender won over 50 percent of the first-choice votes with 4,883. 

Ward 11 (Northrop, Hale, Diamond Lake)

Jeremy Schroeder defeated incumbent Ward 11 City Council Member John Quincy in the second round of vote tallying. Schroeder led Quincy narrowly in the first round with 3,230 votes to Quincy’s 3,200. Schroeder ended the second round with 4,757 total votes. 

Ward 12 (Standish, Howe, Minnehaha)

Incumbent Ward 12 City Council Member Andrew Johnson won re-election on Tuesday night in the first round of voting, surpassing 50 percent of first-choice votes with 8,874. 

Ward 13 (Kenny, Fulton, Linden Hills)

Incumbent Ward 13 City Council Member Linea Palmisano was re-elected Tuesday night in the first round of vote tallying. Palmisano surpassed 50 percent of first-choice votes with 9,404 votes.
