The bulk of heavy snowfall and strong winds swept through Minnesota’s southern cities Monday, including Minneapolis and St. Paul.

Students at the University of Minnesota and others in surrounding areas had to trudge through 8-15 inches of snow throughout Monday. Wind gusts were up to 30 mph in Hennepin County and the surrounding area, according to the National Weather Service.  

The snowfall wasn’t enough to cancel classes at the University, but professors were free to do so at their own discretion, according to an email sent to the University community from administrators.

The Minneapolis public school system announced that their offices and classes at its schools were canceled for Tuesday.

Minneapolis officials declared a snow emergency just before 2:30 p.m. Monday, restricting parking beginning at 9 p.m. so crews can plow more than 1,000 miles of streets. Gov. Mark Dayton issued an executive order to provide assistance and emergency relief to motorists, and directed the National Guard to assist.

The Minneapolis-St. Paul airport had all four of its runways closed at 4:30 p.m., and had re-opened two of them by 7:05 p.m.

As of 8:45 p.m., the Minnesota State Patrol reported 231 car crashes while 435 vehicles spun out or off the road. There was one serious injury and no deaths.
