Carlie Wagner notches 2,000 points in loss to Iowa

Senior Carlie Wagner became the fifth women’s basketball player at Minnesota to score 2,000 points in her career.

Minnesota (17-6, 6-4 Big Ten) couldn’t keep the magic of the three-game win streak on Sunday.

The Gophers lost to Iowa (18-7, 6-5 Big Ten) 92-84 Sunday, dropping to sixth in the Big Ten standings.

Minnesota’s victory included one at Williams Arena over Iowa just two games ago. The Gophers never had the lead in the game Sunday, but were tied for just over 0:30 in total.

The Gophers came close to beating the Hawkeyes in the game. Minnesota brought the lead down to just four points numerous times in the last few minutes.

“The third and fourth quarter we played exceptionally well,” head coach Marlene Stollings said. “We battled the heck out of them and got it down to a two-possession game late.”

The Gophers were down by 15 points at the half. However, the team outscored the Hawkeyes 24-20 in the third quarter and 27-24 in the fourth to decrease the deficit.

Though the team lost, Minnesota still saw one of its player accomplish an important milestone.

Senior Carlie Wagner made history by becoming the fifth women’s basketball player at Minnesota to score 2,000 points in her career. Wagner scored 20 points in the loss, which brings her career total to 2,010 points in her career, good for fifth in all-time Gophers scoring.

“It’s a great honor,” Wagner said. “It’s pretty amazing and I feel blessed to get to that point with the people I had around me.”

The Gophers didn’t start the game the way they wanted to, going down in the first three minutes 13-2. It was a fight back from there, but they couldn’t get the points back that they missed out on early in the game.

Guard Kenisha Bell was the highest scorer in the game. She scored 35 points with seven rebounds in the loss.

“I was just trying to do anything to contribute to the team so we can get back into the game,” Bell said.

Stollings said that Bell was one of the clutch performers down the stretch and led the team to the comeback that brought them close near the end.

Iowa was led by forward Megan Gustafson and forward Chase Coley. Gustafson scored 25 points and Coley had 17 points in the Hawkeyes victory.

Bell and Wagner both started the game, and that keeps them both as the only Minnesota players to start in every game this season.

Minnesota returns to action again on Thursday against Purdue in West Lafayette, Indiana.
