The Gophers traveled to their first tournament in three weeks.

The team finished outside the top 10 in Fairfax, California.

Minnesota finished the Meadow Club Women’s Collegiate in 11th place on Tuesday. The tournament featured 16 teams. The plan was to play two rounds on Monday, but with a frost delay, the teams were forced to play just one round on Monday and one on Tuesday.

Washington took home the championship, finishing at three under par for the tournament. The Gophers finished at 32-over par. They shot eight strokes better in the second round than the first. Senior Sabrine Garrison and freshman Joanne Free led the way for Minnesota. Garrison finished tied for 28th place at five-over par and Free finished tied for 31st place at six-over par.

“We have only been on grass for the eight days of this semester, so to see them improve as much as they did while we were out there was really nice to see,” head coach Michele Redman said.

Freshman Kate Lillie finished the tournament tied 52nd. The leader Garrison and Free shot 75 and 76 respectively. After shooting in the 80’s in the first round, freshman Grace Kellar and senior Muyu Wu came back with strong second rounds. Kellar shot a 76 and Wu shot a 75.

Junior Maggie Heggerston was playing individually and had a career best finish in the tournament. She shot a 72 on the final day after an 80 in the first round to end the tournament tied for 41st.

“It is going to boost her confidence,” Redman said. “She has had an injury with her foot and she has been working very hard to get back to where she can be, but she was happy with how she played.”
