Senior Sabrine Garrison said she was emotional after finishing her final collegiate round.

In her last tournament, Minnesota’s only senior finished in seventh at the Big Ten championships.

Garrison led the Gophers to an 11th place team finish and a score of 33-over par in the Big Ten championships, a three-day event that started Friday at TPC River’s Bend in Maineville, Ohio. Garrison scored three-under par.

Head coach Michele Redman was excited to see Garrison finish so well.

“I think it is a really nice way to cap off a great career here. She played really well and I’m happy,”  Redman said. “She has done everything right since she has been here, so it is fun to see good things happen to good people.”

Garrison entered the final day at even par and tied for 13th place. She knew she would need to have a good round to at least crack the top 10. She went on to shoot a final round of three-under 69 to get her to three-under par for the tournament.

“It was really surreal. Coming into the last few holes, I got a little [nervous] knowing those were my last,” Garrison said. “Most of the day, I wasn’t thinking about golf, I was just trying to take it all in and enjoy that last round, and it was fun.”

Garrison set herself up by shooting an opening round 70. When Garrison finished her round, she was the leader in the clubhouse. After all golfers had finished the first day, she was tied for third.

The second day proved to be tougher for Garrison. She shot two-over par, which took her out of the top 10.

The rest of the Gophers did not have as successful a week. Freshman Joanne Free was the next top golfer for the Gophers, finishing tied for 54th. Grace Kellar finished tied for 57th and Maggie Heggerston finished tied 60th.

The Gophers’ season scoring average leader, Muyu Wu, finished tied for 62nd.

“I think the one thing that got me today is that we came back and had a strong finish, we just will need our team to get more consistent moving forward,” Redman said.
