Last Friday, while local couture made its way down Twin Cities runways for Fashion Week MN, University of Minnesota students held down the campus fashion front.
A&E camped out near the Weisman Art Museum to see what students are sporting this fall. Our takeaways? Lots of neutrals, denim jackets and layers — University students are sticking to the basics.
Here are four looks that caught our attention:
Sophomore, prospective economics or political science major
What he wore: Shoes from Nordstrom Rack, Uniqlo pants, turtleneck from Amazon, jacket from Kohl’s and Topo Designs backpack
Favorite fall fashion piece: An oversized hoodie (“It feels like a blanket everywhere you go")
This is how you do an all black outfit for the fall. Nourkadi combined a long jacket with a simple turtleneck for a refined look.
“I pretty much only wear black, and I really like sweaters — the feeling of compression against your body is really nice. I also like long jackets,” Nourkadi said.
We’re still thinking about this chic combo, and we hope he found a full-length mirror for the perfect outfit picture. Instagram — not just Washington Avenue — needed to see this look.
Freshman, undecided major
What she wore: Pieces mostly thrifted, boots gifted from her mom
Favorite fall fashion piece: Funky, oversized sweaters
Long is a thrifty shopper — her skirt is from a place that sells clothes by the pound. That’s not the only reason we loved her ensemble, though. Her skirt's graphic black-and-white print popped against her burnt orange sweater, which helped to ring in the fall season.
“I knew it was going to be really cold, and I wanted to dress up because my friend is coming. I was sick of wearing pants, too, so I wore a long skirt with tights,” Long said.
Sophomore, prospective finance major
What he wore: Abercrombie and Fitch jeans, Hollister sweater, Burberry jacket, Alfani leather Chelsea boots, Louis Vuitton sunglasses and Herschel backpack
Favorite fall fashion piece: Jackets
Wang is from California, but instead of hiding from the cold air, he thrives in it.
“I love jackets. I have a ton of jackets. It’s hard to choose from them in the morning … and you can’t really wear [them] too much in California or during the summer,” Wang said.
We were drawn to Wang’s skillful combination of seemingly basic pieces. The army green jacket, ripped jeans and cream sweater make for a perfect fall outfit.
As for the Louis Vuitton sunglasses? We’re very, very jealous.
Junior, theatre arts major
What she wore: Old Navy shoes, pants from Nordstrom Rack, denim jacket from Ragstock and H&M hoodie
Favorite fall fashion piece: A denim jacket and any beanie
Wesley made athleisure look luxe — we loved the velvety texture of her joggers combined with the pale pink hoodie.
“I wasn’t ready to break out my actual winter jacket,” Wesley said. “I like the look of layers, too. This pink hoodie is a staple in my wardrobe. I wear it with everything.”
Wesley's look models how layers can work well for the fall. Not only do they keep you warm in the harsh wind, but they introduce new textures and colors to an outfit.
