Researchers find errors in study about warming ocean temperatures

A major study inaccurately claimed that oceans are getting 60 percent warmer than previously thought.

A high-profile study released two weeks ago regarding climate change and ocean warming was found to have some minor errors in central calculations.

The authors from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography and Princeton University submitted corrections to the journal in which it was published.

“We are redoing the calculations and preparing author corrections for submission to [the journal],” wrote co-author Ralph Keeling on the Scripps website on Friday.

The study claimed the world’s oceans are warming at an alarming rate — faster than previously believed. While the authors say the oceans are still warming, the margin of error is now larger.

The problems “do not invalidate the study’s methodology or the new insights into ocean biogeochemistry on which it is based,” Keeling wrote in the Scripps press release.

The authors have reworked their calculations and are submitting corrections to the journal.

The Minnesota Daily wrote about the study’s findings on Monday. The article has since been updated.
