A University of Minnesota student plans to sue the University after Chinese billionaire Richard Liu was not charged for his alleged sexual assault of the student, according to reports from the Star Tribune and Associated Press.

The student’s attorney sent a letter to the University claiming administration ignored a hostile environment in a graduate program that Liu was participating in, the Star Tribune report stated. The alleged victim was a volunteer with the program and attended a dinner event with Liu the night of the alleged rape. 

The University “placed its own financial and political interests ahead of the safety and security of its female students,” according to the attorney’s letter quoted in the Star Tribune.

Liu, founder of online retailer JD.com, was participating in the Carlson School’s China Doctor of Business Administration program at the time of the alleged rape. He was arrested and released in late August.

The office of Hennepin County AttorneyMike Freeman released a statement last week claiming it did not find enough evidence to charge Liu of the alleged assault.

According to Liu’s attorney, the billionaire was arrested based on a false claim and District Attorney Freeman’s decision to not file charges “vindicates him,” according to the AP report.
