Culture compass: Women, spelling and avocado toast

Here’s your A&E guide to the weekend.

Friday: “Clay Snowman Making

Dock 6 Pottery is offering you the cutest way to get into pottery: making your own little snowman. Sure, it’s March and we’re all waiting on spring, but there’s at least a foot of snow on the ground — make it enjoyable! The clay snowmen are free to make, and Dock 6 will fire your creation for $10 if you want to keep it. In about three weeks, you’ll love the memento of the snow and bitter cold.

Where: Dock 6 Pottery, 4206 E. 34th St., Minneapolis

When: 2 – 6 p.m.

Cost: Free to play, $10 to buy your snowman

Saturday: “The Drinkin’ Spelling Bee

If you like free beer and spelling, this event is right up your a-l-l-e-y. The Drinkin’ Spelling Bee follows the format of a traditional spelling bee, but each time you win a round you get a free beer. You can ask for your word’s definition, part of speech, language of origin and for it to be used in a “mildly offensive” sentence. The winner will get part of their bar tab taken care of and bragging rights for the night. Study up!

Where: 331 Club, 331 13th Ave. NE., Minneapolis

When: 7 p.m.

Cost: $8

Ages: 21+

Sunday: Fringe Presents: “Women’s March

In celebration of International Women’s Day, Minnesota Fringe is bringing together five acts generated by women. “Not Fair, My Lady!” from the Minnesota Fringe Festival and spoken word by Minnesota native Tish Jones are just two of the empowering performances you can catch at the Minnsky Theatre. In addition to improv and poetry, there will be music and a solo play. The event runs all weekend, but Sunday’s show will include “Chasing Blue,” “Not Fair, My Lady!” and “Tish Jones & Friends.”

Where: Minnsky Theatre, 1517 Central Ave NE., Minneapolis

When: 7 – 10 p.m.

Cost: $18 at door, $15 advanced

CULTURE TO CONSUME

Listen to this: Hozier’s “Wasteland, Baby!”

Released last week, this is an album you don’t want to skip. Hozier is finally back with some new music and he’s the happiest you’ve ever heard him. The songs “Nobody” and “Almost (Sweet Music)” have a freedom and sweetness that has not been heard from the artist before. The whole album screams Irish soul music (if that genre even exists), and it will be the only thing you’ll listen to for the next month.

Watch This: Bon Appétit’s “Test Kitchen” videos

These videos will definitely make you wish you went to culinary school. The Bon Appétit YouTube channel includes several mini series, including “It’s Alive” with Brad Leone and “Gourmet Makes” with Claire Saffitz. The chefs are all endearing in their own ways, and their senses of humor add a layer to the how-to clips that makes you think you could successfully attempt whatever gourmet meal they’ve cooked up.

Eat this: Trader Joe’s Avocado Tzatziki Dip

This will bring your avocado toast to a whole new level. You could spend all of your extra time topping your toast with arugula, tomatoes or an egg … or you could also just skip that and go straight to this. Not only will you save time in the morning, your breakfast will be incredibly tasty, too. The dip is made with Greek yogurt, cucumbers, jalapenos and lemons. What more could you want?
