A&E’s guide to Pride in the Twin Cities

From yoga to drunk history, there are plenty of ways to celebrate this weekend.

June is LGBTQ Pride month, and it’s finally Minneapolis’s official weekend to celebrate.

There’s no need to scramble at the last minute to make plans — A&E has you covered with a variety of events to make your pride celebrations exactly what you want them to be.

Queertopia 2018

Now in its 13th year, Queertopia is an annual queer art project that combines visual art, performance and art installations from over 25 queer and trans artists. Though opening night is sold out, advance tickets are only $15 throughout the weekend.

Where: Red Eye Theater, 15 W. 14th St., Minneapolis

When: Wednesday, June 20 – 23, 7:30 p.m.

Cost: $15 for advance and student tickets, $18 at the door

Third Thursday: Pride

Mia celebrates art with food, drinks and live music every third Thursday of the month, and this month’s event is Pride-themed. Head to the museum on Thursday and you’ll be able to design your own Pride flag, watch drag performances and (of course) dance.

Where: Minneapolis Institute of Art, 2400 3rd Ave. S., Minneapolis

When: Thursday, June 21, 6 to 9 p.m.

Cost: Free

Queerly Beloved

Looking to give back this Pride month? Saint Mark’s Episcopal Church is hosting a night of celebration and fundraising that will benefit LGBTQ homeless youth. The night includes a community meal, with a suggested donation of $5 to $10, and a panel on LGBTQ youth homelessness, with a suggested donation of $10 to $20. Afterwards, cap off the night with a sober dance party — tickets are available online, with a suggested donation of $5 to $10, and you can suggest songs on the Saint Mark’s website.

Where: Saint Mark’s Episcopal Church, 519 Oak Grove St., Minneapolis

When: Friday, June 22, 5:30 to 10 p.m.

Cost: Donations suggested for each event; with donations benefit LGBTQ homeless youth

Twin Cities Pride Parade and Celebrations

The 2018 Ashley Rukes GLBT Pride Parade starts at the corner of 3rd Street South and Hennepin Avenue in downtown Minneapolis. The parade then ends at Loring Park, with festivities continuing in the park throughout the evening. The festival itself features food, exhibitor booths and four stages with free music and entertainment.

It’s free and the weather should be nice — what better way to celebrate?

Where: Loring Park, 1382 Willow St., Minneapolis

When: Saturday and Sunday, June 23 and 24, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. (parade starts at 11 a.m. on Sunday)

Cost: Free

Flip Phone XXL: Pride

Flip Phone prides itself on two things: dance parties and drag brunches. Its Pride party is the perfect combination of the two. After celebrating at Loring Park all day, head to First Avenue to dance to all your favorite LGBTQ anthems. Get tickets soon — Flip Phone’s events tend to sell out quickly!

Where: First Avenue, 701 N. 1st Ave., Minneapolis

When: Saturday, June 23, 9 p.m.

Cost: $15

Pride Yoga MPLS

Yoga is the best way to relax after a long week of celebration. Greenway Yoga in Whittier is offering a yoga class on Sunday evening that focuses on self-love and empowerment.

Where: Greenway Yoga, 2510 Nicollet Ave. S., Suite #103, Minneapolis

When: Sunday, June 24, 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.

Cost: suggested donation of $10

Post-Pride Week Drunk Queer History

You’ve probably seen “Drunk History” on Comedy Central. This specific event focuses on stories of queer history, told by Gadfly Theatre Productions. One storyteller gets drunk, and the improv team creates a show based on the inebriated tale.

Where: LUSH, 990 Central Ave. NE., Minneapolis

When: Tuesday, June 26, 7 p.m.

Cost: $10

Correction: A previous version of this article misstated the dates of the Twin Cities Pride Parade and Festival. The festival takes place both June 23 and 24, with the parade taking place at 11 a.m. on Sunday the 24th.
