E. Coli Causes Lake Harriet Southeast Beach Closure

Recent test results showed high levels of E. coli bacteria in Lake Harriet on Tuesday. The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board temporarily shut down the lake’s Southeast Beach, the Star Tribune reported.

No illnesses due to the E. coli have been reported and Lake Harriet’s North Beach remains open, CBS Minnesota said.

The Star Tribune said the water tested near Southeast Beach had E. coli levels reaching 2,420, almost double the maximum amount allowed before an area is shut down.

Recent hot weather and heavy rainfall are likely factors contributing to the increased bacteria levels, CBS Minnesota said.

Testing will be conducted again on Wednesday and the beach will reopen once E. coli levels fall below the state limit, the Star Tribune reported.
