Minn. Secretary of State would support early voting legislation

Minnesota Secretary of State Mark Ritchie said Tuesday that he would support legislation that would expand early voting in the state, the Associated Press reported.

Ritchie said that he's confident that Minnesotans are ready for expanded voting window but wasn't sure what form that may take. He also said that he believes that early voting would increase voter turnout, especially in off-year municipal elections.

Minnesota voters can currently cast absentee ballots before Election Day but only if they officially have one of only a few valid reasons for voting early. Minnesota has a history of leading the nation in voter turnout with 76 percent of eligible voters casting ballots in 2012.

Over 30 states currently allow some form of no-excuse early voting.
