Dung Beetles Use the Milky Way as a Map

I found another random thing on NPR yesterday. An Australian scientist teaching in Sweden, with the help of a team, discovered that dung beetles use the Milky Way the guide themselves.

When the team of scientists covered the heads of the beetles so they could not see the sky, they pushed their dung ball in circles instead of a straight line. They also tested the beetles in a planetarium. When they changed the sky in the planetarium to not have the Milky Way, the beetles could not go in a straight line.

I recommend listening to the entire piece here. It’s quite entertaining.
