Dow tops 15,000 mark for the first time

The Dow Jones industrial average rallied past 15,000 points for the first time in history Friday, the Wall Street Journal reported.

During midday trading the Dow was up 152 points, or one percent of 14,984. According to NBC News, the government said job growth was stronger than expected last month and the unemployment rate hit a four-year low. 

The Standard & Poor's 500 index also hit a record, crossing 1,600 for the first time. 

As of 1 p.m. EST, the Dow had slipped back under the 15,000 marks and was sitting at 14,998. 

The S&P 500 is up 30 percent from the start of the year. The Dow is up 14 percent.
