Tornadoes, severe thunderstorms strike Midwest

Tornadoes and severe thunderstorms tore through several Midwest cities Sunday afternoon, damaging multiple central Illinois communities and killing at least five people, news sources reported.

Dozens of people were injured and crowds had to evacuate the stands of Chicago's Soldier Field during a delayed Bears game, the Washington Post reported.

"It was complete destruction," said Anthony Khoury, who lives in Washington, Ill., CNN reported. "There are people in the streets crying," he said, CNN reported.

The storms destroyed at least 70 homes in two Illinois communities and rescuers were trying to help people trapped in their basements, CNN reported.

A hospital in Peoria was treating almost 40 people with injuries from the storm, CNN reported.

“I stepped outside and I heard it coming. My daughter was already in the basement, so I ran downstairs and grabbed her, crouched in the laundry room and all of a sudden I could see daylight up the stairway and my house was gone," Washington resident Michael Perdun said, the Washington Post reported.
