Mandatory free earplugs destined for Minneapolis nightclubs

Earplugs will soon become a common feature at many local venues.

A new Minneapolis city ordinance mandates that music venues provide patrons with earplugs when requested.

City Council member Jacob Frey, who represents the University area, introduced the ordinance and told the Minnesota Daily that hearing loss was a growing issue for young people.  He also said that Minneapolis would be one of the first cities in the country with an ordinance of this nature.

The cost of the earplugs will not fall on the shoulders of local businesses,  but will be paid for by a coalition of local companies, the Star Tribune reported.

According to MPR News the ordinance will go into effect April 19 and will apply to around 185 bars, clubs, and performance venues as a part of their liquor licenses.
