Fifty-five schools face federal sex-assault investigations

The U.S. Department of Education has released today a list of 55 colleges and universities currently under investigation for Title IX violations, based on the handling of sexual abuse claims.

The University of Minnesota does not appear on the list.

Title IX prohibits gender discrimination for institutions that receive federal funds. It’s most commonly known as the law that assures girls have equal access to sports, but recently has become the route for sexual assault victims who claim their schools ignored them, according to the associated press.

The list includes prominent schools like Princeton and Harvard but also large state institutions like the University of Ohio.

According to a press release, the Department has confirmed individual Title IX investigations at institutions, but the list is the first comprehensive look at which campuses are under review by the Department’s Office for Civil Rights for possible violations of the law's requirements on sexual violence.

Disclosers on any case-specific facts or details about the institutions under investigation will not be released, according to the department.

Education Secretary Arne Duncan said there was "lots of internal debate" about whether to release the list but that he believes in transparency; he said the more the country is talking about the problem of sexual assault, the better, according to reports.
