Green Line hits pedestrian

A man was hospitalized with noncritical injuries after being struck by the Green Line light-rail Monday.

The westbound light-rail hit the man at the intersection of Chatsworth Street and University Avenue in St. Paul just after 1 p.m. The accident left the man with a gash in his head and leg injuires, the Pioneer Press reported.

The train was stopped for about an hour and riders were bussed to their destinations, the Star Tribune reported.

A preliminary Metro Transit police investigation determined that the man, taken to Regions Hospital, was illegally walking between the light-rail's tracks.

Metro Transit spokesman Drew Kerr told the Star Tribune that this was the first time the Green Line had hit a pedestrian to his knowledge.

The driver was placed on paid leave and will undergo routine drug and alcohol testing before returning to his job.

Green Line trains travel up to 35 mph, but Kerr told the Pioneer Press the speed it was traveling when the accident occurred had yet to be determined.
