Former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty answered questions at the University of Minnesota’s Humphrey School of Public Affairs Friday about income inequality in the state, problems with the political system and his future in politics.

Pawlenty said income and education inequality are major problems in Minnesota.

 “There is an enormous correlation between income inequality and education inequality,” he said. “We have to incentivize the best teachers to serve in the most disadvantaged areas.”

Politicians are worried about opposition from within their party, Pawlenty said. If a politician takes too moderate a stance on an issue, then someone from farther left or right may try to take his or her seat, he said.

When asked about his future in politics he said, “I’m politically retired,” and that there isn’t much more he can do politically after his unsuccessful presidential bid. He did add though that he doesn’t know what possibilities the future could hold.
