EBay joins other retailers in removing Confederate flag from its stores

EBay announced today that it would no longer sell Confederate flags and other similarly-themed  merchandise, calling it a "contemporary symbol of divisiveness and racism," the Associate Press reports.

EBay joins Walmart, Amazon, Etsy and Sears, who have carried out bans of Confederate flag merchandize, according to CNN.

"This decision is consistent with our long-standing policy that prohibits items that promote or glorify hatred, violence and racial intolerance," eBay spokeswoman Johnna Hoff told the Associated Press.

Despite the new policy, eBay continues to sell other merchandise associated with white supremacy, including Ku Klux Klan themed objects and Nazi memorabilia, the Guardian reports.

CNN reports that a nation-wide debate over the Confederate flag’s use took off after photos surfaced later of the alleged perpetrator of last week’s massacre in Charleston, which left nine black parishioners dead, holding the flag.

As retailers announce the removal of confederate merchandise, CNN reported Amazon’s sales of confederate flags have shot up. One of the flags was the best-selling outdoor flag or banner on Amazon at the time of CNN’s report.
