Constable wins state amateur tourney

Former Gophers golfer Donald Constable won the 54-hole Minnesota State Amateur Golf Tournament Wednesday with a 7-under par 206.

Constable led after all three rounds, posting respective scores of 66, 71 and 69 at the par-71 White Bear Yacht Club in Dellwood, Minn.

“The right guy won,” said runner-up Dillon Shultz in a release. Shultz, who won Minnesota’s 2009 Class 2A state title at Springfield/Pomfrey, posted a 4-under 209 to tie for second place with Adam Riddering.

Constable first took the lead on the back nine in the first round and never gave it up.

Constable, last year’s runner-up, won the 2006 Class 2A state title at Minnetonka and finished his Gophers career last year with a career stroke average of 73.07, good for fourth-lowest in team history.
