Report: UND to leave WCHA

The University of North Dakota men’s hockey team will leave the WCHA in 2013-14 for a newly-created conference with at least five other teams, the Grand Forks Herald reported Thursday.

Sources told the paper that the Sioux will be joined by Denver, Colorado College, Nebraska-Omaha, Minnesota-Duluth and Miami (Ohio).

The move will coincide with the first year of the Big Ten men’s hockey conference, which will feature current WCHA teams Minnesota and Wisconsin, along with CCHA programs Michigan, Michigan State and Ohio State. Penn State, which is using an $88 million private donation to build a hockey rink and upgrade its men’s hockey program from club to Division I status, will begin varsity play in 2012-13 and join the Big Ten conference the following year.

The move will leave the WCHA with five teams and the CCHA with four, presumably meaning there is more realignment of the college hockey landscape to come.
