Gophers’ QB decision will come Saturday; Nebraska’s Martinez expected to play

The Gophers on Thursday released their depth chart for Saturday's game against Nebraska but did not announce whether Mitch Leidner or Philip Nelson will start at quarterback.

Leidner, a redshirt freshman, has started the last two games but struggled in Minnesota's win over Northwestern last Saturday.  The team benched him early in the second quarter in favor of Nelson, a sophomore, who finished the game 8-11 passing with 112 yards and one touchdown.

Leidner was not feeling well earlier this week, acting head coach and defensive coordinator Tracy Claeys said Tuesday, but he practiced Wednesday.

Nebraska's Martinez expected to play

Nebraska quarterback Taylor Martinez will likely see playing time Saturday, Nebraska head coach Bo Pelini said Thursday.

Pelini did not say, however, whether Martinez or freshman Tommy Armstrong would start.

Martinez hasn't played since Sept. 14 because of a turf toe injury but he has practiced this week.  The senior is Nebraska's all-time leader in total offense, passing yards, completions, touchdown passes and starts by a quarterback.

Armstrong has started all three games in Martinez's absence.  The Cornhuskers are 3-0 during that stretch.

Other Gophers notes:

Junior David Cobb will start at running back after rushing for 103 yards last week.  Sophomore running back Rodrick Williams Jr. is questionable after sustaining a foot injury during practice this week.

Third-string quarterback, freshman Chris Streveler, will not be availabe for a third-straight game because of a hand injury.
