Men’s Swimming and Diving at NCAA Championships Recap — Day 1

Senior sprint freestyler Derek Toomey competed in the final 50-yard freestyle swim of his Minnesota career Thursday on the opening night of the 2014 NCAA Championships. Toomey tied his career-high time from the Big Ten Championships by finishing in 19.05 seconds. Despite the solid time, the senior placed fourth in the race.

Toomey also competed in both the 200-yard freestyle relay and the 400-yard medley relay. Freshmen Daryl Tuner, Paul Fair, and Ian Gordon teamed up with Toomey in the 200-yard freestyle relay to produce a 13th place finish.

While the 400-yard medley relay team of Toomey, Turner, senior Kyler Van Swol, and freshman Nick Hatanaka placed 17th — one spot shy of a place in the B final.

Reigning Big Ten Freshman of the Year Jakub Maly finished 27th in the 200-yard IM.

Freshman diver Matt Barnard also received his first NCAA action of the weekend when he placed 31st on the one-meter springboard with a score of 281 points.

The Gophers as a team tallied 23 points — good enough for 18th place through one day.

Host team Texas leads in the team standings with 146 points. California trails closely behind them with 145 and Florida ends day one in third place with 137 points.
