Three Gophers jump ship to smaller programs

With spring practices beginning in just over a couple months, the Gophers found out Wednesday that quarterback Dimonic Roden-McKinzy, wide receiver Conner Krizancic and defensive tackle Demaris Peppers will not be apart of year five under head coach Jerry Kill.

All three players were three-star recruits out of high school, but rarely saw the field during their short time as Gophers.

Roden-McKinzy will be headed to Hutchinson Community College in Kan., after he lost his third-string spot on the depth chart to walk-on and Minnesota native Jacques Perra.

Krizancic is the only one of the three players who transferred to another Division 1 program, after announcing on Twiiter that he plans to “fulfill my dream of being a Division 1 quarterback at Ohio University.”

Krizancic switched from receiver to quarterback before his senior year of high school, leading his team to the state championship game. The Ohio native signed with the Gophers as a receiver but was redshirted due to an injured hamstring suffered before training camp.

Minnesota will host the Ohio Bobcats for next year’s homecoming game  Sept. 26.

After spending two years in Minneapolis, Peppers will be transferring to FCS school Jackson State in Mississippi. Peppers is the only one of the three players to ever step on the field as a Gopher, appearing in the season opener against Eastern Illinois, but with talented freshman on the defensive line Peppers figured to get minimal playing time if he were to stay in Minnesota.

Now, here are a few other early offseason headlines to know as we move closer to the 2015 season:

Stud tight end Maxx Williams announced that he will enter the 2015 NFL draft. Williams still had two years of eligibility left in Minneapolis, but is regarded by many as the best tight end prospect in the nation and looks to be drafted late in the first round or early in the second round.

The Gophers were not ranked in the final Associated Press poll, but did make an appearance in ESPN’s “way-too-early top 25,” coming in at No. 25.

Also ranked in that poll is No. 1 TCU, who the Gophers play to start the 2015 season at home Sept. 3, and No. 2 and reigning National Champion Ohio State, who the Gophers will travel to play Nov. 7.

The rest of the games on next year’s schedule don’t seem to be much easier as the Gophers will travel and play Colorado State and Iowa and will host Nebraska, Michigan and Wisconsin.
