Yearly data shows spike in crime alerts

University police sent 17 alerts for 23 crimes this school year, more than any semester in recent years.

The University of Minnesota community received more crime alerts last fall than in any other semester in the last six years.

University police have sent 17 alerts for 23 crimes this school year, compared to 10 alerts for 13 crimes during the 2012-13 school year.

While the number of violent crimes on and near campus is down, the recent spike in brazen crime has prompted the University to implement new programs and policies to protect the community.

The University emails crime alerts to students, faculty and staff when a violent crime has occurred on or near campus, in compliance with federal law.

The Minnesota Daily analyzed crime alerts since 2008 by the type of crime, number of suspects and victims, and the time of day to see how they’ve changed over the years.
