West Bank locks up

Some buildings will have shorter hours and U Card access.

Starting Monday, buildings on the University of Minnesota’s West Bank will have limited access.

University Services Vice President Pamela Wheelock sent an email to University students, faculty and staff Saturday announcing the start of the Building Access Pilot Program, which administrators launched in response to the rise in brazen crimes this year.

The program aims to increase security and gather information about how buildings are used, and it will require U Cards for access to seven buildings on campus during specific “University hours.”

Only buildings on the West Bank — including Anderson Hall, the Carlson School of Management and Hanson Hall — will close at three different access times.

During regular business hours, anyone can access the buildings. During University hours, which run from 6 a.m. to 7 a.m. and from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m., only those with a U Card will be able to enter.

But from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m., during restricted hours, buildings will be closed to everyone except those with special permission.

Currently, most campus buildings are open to the public. Hours vary by building, but classrooms are unlocked from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.
