Culture compass: Herbal tea, building bridges and a cappella

The "A Capell-Off" returns for another year, with five a capella groups competing for a $250 cash prize. The night will be jam-packed with a capella renditions of your favorite classics. 7Days A Cappella, Urban Sound, The Enchantments and Basses Wild will compete against last year’s winners, Vocal U. The event is completely free and open only to University of Minnesota students.

Pulling strings with Liz Howls

When Liz Howls was a child in Iowa, her father brought home a refrigerator box and cut a hole in it. Just like that, the young Howls had her first puppet theater. She loved putting on productions for her parents in their living room, using the cloth puppets her mother already had from her job as a children’s librarian.

Northeast coffee shop serves up local music

Five Watt Coffee’s Northeast location, which opened about a year ago, is quickly becoming a hub for local musicians to gather and share their work. The shop’s “Bummer Strummer Sessions” feature heavyhearted acoustic tunes that invite everyone in the room to find camaraderie through what's described as “intimate feels.”

Apparel design majors put their costume sewing skills to the test

When you're an apparel design student, every day requires costuming. These are the people we look to for fashion inspiration, after all. Oct. 31, however, is special. Chances are, you won't find a pre-packaged costume in McNeal Hall, as students often use the holiday to show off niche skills.

After years of haunting downtown, zombies crawl home

All along the river bank near Sibley Street in Northeast on Saturday, puddles of red stained the sidewalk. For over a decade, the Minneapolis Zombie Pub Crawl has taken place in downtown Minneapolis. This year it returned to Northeast, where it began in 2005.

TransFabulous provides creative outlet — one medium at a time

With blank pages in front of them, participants sat at tables organized in a tight, intimate circle. Observing the different charcoal tools available to them, they listened to the artist describe their various uses. TransFabulous workshops create a space for trans youth — though all are welcome — to express themselves through different artistic mediums while connecting the Twin Cities trans community. This month’s workshop ran last Wednesday and presented charcoal as an artistic outlet.

This week in movies: 'The Hate U Give' and 'Bad Times at the El Royale'

Based on a young adult novel by Angie Thomas, “The Hate U Give” features a main character who leads two lives. Starr Carter (Amandla Stenberg) lives with her family in a predominantly black neighborhood. During the week, she — “Starr version two,” as she calls herself — goes to a private school with mostly wealthy, white students.
