UMN ranks third for Peace Corps volunteers

A report released last month by Peace Corps, the U.S. governmental organization that connects volunteers with underserved communities, ranked the University of Minnesota as third in the nation for supplying Peace Corps volunteers.

On renaming, regents pursue own historical research

After a University task force recommended renaming four buildings on campus, some members of the Board of Regents went to local archives to do their own research. However, several historians familiar with contextualizing higher education archives and assessing the actions of historic figures see the regents’ approach to this historical debate as insufficient.

CLA names new commencement speaker

University of Minnesota creative writing professor Julie Schumacher will replace Jim Burke, producer of the Oscar-winning film “Green Book,” as the College of Liberal Arts' 2019 commencement speaker. A CLA announcement stated Burke withdrew due to "family health matters."

'Indiana Jones' of fungi helps save Egyptian artifacts

Two hundred miles south of Cairo, in an old part of Egypt west of the river Nile, there is life in the city of the dead. Wood-decaying fungi have been feasting in the tombs of Abydos for millennia, leaving the ornate caskets and hand-carved statues so weak they disintegrate at the touch.

UMN student organizations bridge the gap between their communities and cultures

Two University of Minnesota student groups held a discussion last week in hopes of bridging the gap between their cultures and seeking solidarity. The Asian-American Student Union and the Black Student Union held a (POC)ulture workshop Friday examining stereotypes and attitudes within the black and Asian communities through the frames of pop culture and historical context.
