Blank: Solving climate change requires more than just solar panels

The bottom line is this: renewable energy is essential to the fight against climate change. But due to the fact that the majority of our emissions stem from non-electric processes, and converting these processes to electricity can be very expensive if not downright impossible, we shouldn’t be convinced that renewables represent 100 percent of the solution to climate change.

Skoog: No justice, no peace, more police?

With its history of brutal discrimination, not to mention the fact that Minneapolis cops haven’t been required to live in the precinct that they police since 1999, increasing law enforcement’s presence doesn’t seem like a move to strengthen community ties, but rather an effort to subjugate marginalized communities.

Blank: University of Minnesota students need Medicare for all

As we watch the ongoing Democratic debates and think about the upcoming election, we need to remember that Medicare For All and free college aren’t just esoteric policies. They have real-world effects that can genuinely improve mental health, happiness, and well-being for students and citizens of the U.S. alike.

Journalism is a key aspect of our democracy, and the only way for accountability to exist is for journalists to publicize the human rights violations that public and private actors conduct in our communities. This column is crucial to unifying our community to fight for the protection of these residents, and by choosing to whitewash the original article, you are sending a message that you do not care about the victims of this story, and the reader has no reason to either.

Hasan: What's in a name?

During the last week, I have found myself extremely disappointed by my home state. As a native Minnesotan, I would like to believe that our “Minnesota nice” is real and that we have reasons to love and brag about our state. Unfortunately, two major events in the last week make that difficult.
