Gophers to take on Wisconsin at home

The Gophers wrestling team will return to action at home Sunday to face Wisconsin in a battle between two teams that had nearly equal and opposite results last Sunday. Isaac Newton, hold onto your hat. Minnesota shut out Purdue 40-0 on the road last Sunday in a merciless display of dominance. The Badgers, on the other hand, were steamrolled 43-0 by defending national champions Penn State.

No. 4 Gophers defeat Illinois, shut out Purdue

The Gopher wrestling team is still perfect in the conference after it defeated Illinois 25-9 on Friday and shut out Purdue 40-0 Sunday. Minnesota (7-2, 4-0 Big Ten) won 17 of the 20 matches in the two road duals. Zach Sanders (125 pounds) had a ferocious come-from-behind win Friday against fifth-ranked wrestler Jesse Delgado at 125. He won 14-13 after trailing 9-2 following the first period. âÄúSanders was a really exciting match,âÄù head assistant coach Brandon Eggum said. âÄúHe gave up a couple takedowns early against a really good kid, but he just kind of battled back.âÄù

Concussions end Jake Deitchler’s career

  Jake Deitchler is a former Olympian, three-time Minnesota State High School champion and now, at age 22, a former collegiate wrestler. Deitchler chose to end his wrestling career after consulting with a sports concussion specialist and head coach J Robinson over the holiday break. Deitchler and Robinson met with Dr. Michael Collins at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center to discuss his history with concussions, which have plagued him throughout his career. Deitchler got his first concussion when he was seven after he flipped a dirt bike, he said.

Minn. takes down Iowa State at Williams Arena

On a night in which three athletic events took place within 30 yards of each other on campus, the Gophers wrestling team took care of Iowa State 34-6 at Williams Arena. âÄúI think overall weâÄôre starting to go forward and do what we want to do,âÄù head coach J Robinson said. âÄúBut itâÄôs the same thing âÄî we have to be more aggressive, we have to move our hands and we have to be more dominant when weâÄôre wrestling. âÄúThe guys are starting to get the idea, but weâÄôre not there yet, and we have got to keep that aggressive pressure on them all the time.âÄù

Wrestlers to change venues when Iowa State comes to town

After wrestling four of their first five duals on the road, the No. 3 Gophers wrestling team will finally get some home cooking. Minnesota will return home to face unranked Iowa State at Williams Arena on Friday. âÄú[ISU] has some weights that theyâÄôre competitive at,âÄù head assistant coach Brandon Eggum said. âÄúI donâÄôt think thereâÄôs anything really tricky about them âÄî strategic-wise weâÄôre not changing anything.âÄù The dual will be held at Williams Arena because the NCAA Volleyball Tournament will occupy the Sports Pavilion.

Maroon and Gold’s wrestling is a family act

Twins Nick and Chris Dardanes wanted to wrestle together at the collegiate level for a young, talented team. It was those specifications that led them to the University of Minnesota. âÄúWeâÄôve always wanted to go to the same college,âÄù Nick Dardanes said. âÄúWe chose Minnesota because of the young team, how close the group of guys are here and the coaching staff.âÄù The twins are from Chicago, where they attended Oak Park and River Forest High School. Both have been wrestling since they were four years old.

Gophers fall to Oklahoma State, topple Central Michigan

The No. 4 Gophers wrestling team is cutting its teeth against a tough slate of early-season competition, with mixed results. It defeated Central Michigan on Friday 24-9 and fell to No. 2 Oklahoma State 23-14 Sunday in its second tough road trip of the season. Minnesota won only three of 10 matches against the Cowboys and fell to 1-2 against ranked teams. The match started at 133 pounds Sunday afternoon, and the Cowboys wasted no time taking the lead and control of the dual.

Gophers have yet another tough, early season road trip

Two weeks after taking down then-No. 2 Penn State, the No. 4 Gophers wrestling team will get its second chance of the season to defeat a second-ranked team. Minnesota (2-1, 1-0 Big Ten) will take on Central Michigan (5-1) on Friday and travel to Stillwater, Okla., on Sunday to do battle with No. 2 Oklahoma State.

Gophers steamroll NDSU at home, improve to 2-1

A week after upsetting No. 2 Penn State, the No. 3 Gophers wrestling team opened up the home portion of their schedule at the Sports Pavilion by defeating North Dakota State University 29-9. Wrestling started at 197 pounds with Sonny Yohn defeating NDSUâÄôs John Gusewelle 7-1. âÄúIâÄôve [led off] before,âÄù Yohn said. âÄúYou have to warm up a little differently but in the end youâÄôre stepping out there and wrestling the same match.âÄù The Gophers won the next four matches and held the Bison scoreless at 18-0 going into the intermission.

Steinhaus earns weekly honors, team hosts NDSU

After losing to Cornell and upsetting Penn State last weekend, the GophersâÄô wrestling team will host North Dakota State University on Sunday at the Sports Pavilion. The Gophers lost to Cornell on Friday before bouncing back to take down PSU. âÄúThe coaches just told us that whatâÄôs happened has happened âÄî itâÄôs in the past and youâÄôve got to look forward,âÄù David Thorn said. âÄúI think we kind of went into Cornell and there was a lot of hype and we thought that we were just going to walk in there and do our thing and it didnâÄôt happen.âÄù

Gophers top No. 2 Penn State, split weekend

The No. 4 Gophers wrestling team split two duals this weekend, falling to No. 5 Cornell on Friday and defeating No. 2 Penn State on Sunday. As is fast becoming a theme in this young season, Minnesota jumped out to a quick start Sunday in a 23-14 win over the defending NCAA Champions Penn State. The Gophers boast several quality wrestlers at their lightweights. Zach Sanders (125 pounds) and David Thorn (133) earned wins. Thorn and Nick Dardanes (141) earned major decisions and after three matches, Minnesota led 11-0.

Tough early season road trip awaits

With only one event under its belt, the Gophers wrestling team will hit the road this weekend for one of its toughest tests of the season. No. 4 Minnesota will compete in road duals against No. 5 Cornell on Friday and No. 1 Penn State on Sunday. The Nittany Lions are the defending NCAA Champions. High-profile matches this early in the season are a little out of the ordinary, according to heavyweight Tony Nelson.

Gophers dominate Bison Open

Matched up against watered-down competition, the Gophers wrestling team went into the Bison Open and took care of business. The team captured nine individual titles, including at 157 pounds, where Jake Deitchler competed for the first time in more than a year. The only weight class Minnesota didnâÄôt win was 174, in which true freshman Logan Storley took second. He reached the title match, but an injury default forced him from the bout. Coaches were not available for comment on StorleyâÄôs injury.

Gophers get started with Bison Open

For the seventh consecutive season, the Gophers wrestling team will open its season at the Bison Open in Fargo, N.D. âÄúThe Bison [Open] is going to be a good indicator of where our guys are at,âÄù assistant head coach Brandon Eggum said. âÄúFor a number of weights, some guys are using that to determine whoâÄôs the starter at that position.âÄù The Bison Open will take place in the Bison Sports Arena on the campus of North Dakota State University.

Jake Deitchler expected to return as Minnesota begins with Bison Open

After finishing seventh in the NCAA championships last year, the No. 4 GophersâÄô wrestling team will try to rise back to the top of the college wrestling world. Four returning All-Americans, a promising collection of youngsters and the potential return of former phenom Jake Deitchler may help achieve that. âÄúThis is a hard year to predict,âÄù assistant head coach Brandon Eggum said. âÄúWeâÄôve got a lot of young guys that are very talented that we expect big things from.âÄù

The Transition: Joe Russell leaving Gophers staff

Joe Russell enjoyed a few passing moments in his office Monday with his wife Sadie and their 8-month-old son, Taft. He knows those moments in Minnesota are fleeting as he enters a liminal stage in his coaching career. Russell announced two weeks ago that he would step down as head assistant wrestling coach for the Gophers to accept a head coaching position at George Mason University. With boxes strewn about his office and Taft playing with toys in a corner of the disheveled room, Russell acknowledged the change will be bittersweet.

Thorn 3rd, Minnesota 7th at NCAA championships

Despite a disappointing seventh-place finish in the team race, Minnesota grabbed five All-America honors at the NCAA championships, four from wrestlers who will return next season. The All-American who will not be returning, however, is senior captain Mike Thorn (141 pounds), who took third and was the teamâÄôs highest finisher. Last year, senior captain Jayson Ness highlighted the GophersâÄô NCAA championships with closing-seconds heroics. This year, Mike Thorn got his chance. Thorn beat rival Montell Marion of Iowa 4-3 in the waning seconds of their consolation match.

Three finalists, no titles at Big Ten championships

The Gophers wrestling team finished third Sunday at the Big Ten championships, but Iowa and Penn StateâÄôs neck-and-neck team race made Minnesota seem like an also-ran. Penn State won the team championship, ending IowaâÄôs three-year reign as kings of the Big Ten and earning the schoolâÄôs first conference title since joining the Big Ten in 1993. The Gophers sent three wrestlers to the finals but came away with no individual champions.

Big Ten championships provide shot at redemption

Though the Gophers wrestling team dropped a chance at the regular season Big Ten title, the Big Ten championships offer a shot at redemption. After tying Penn State and losing to Iowa in the final two weeks of the regular season, the team will look to prove that it belongs with the class of the Big Ten.
