Gophers finish 17th in NCAA championships

Lizak lost in the championship round in the 2017 tournament, but this year, he had to go through wrestlebacks to finish All-American back-to-back. He lost his second-round match 4-2 in overtime, then followed that with five victories in a row to claim All-American honors and finish fourth. He was the only Minnesota wrestler to finish top eight, the qualification for All-American.

Out of 'the dungeon': UMN wrestling to get new facility

When University of Minnesota head wrestling coach Brandon Eggum was a member of the team in 1995, the squad practiced in “the dungeon” – the wrestling team’s room deep in the basement of the Bierman Field Athletic Building. Today, the team still practices in “the dungeon,” as it has since the early 1970s. But starting next year, the team will practice in a new, privately-funded wrestling facility.

Injury-ridden Gophers head into last stretch of season

Minnesota has fought through numerous injuries en route to an 7-6 overall record. Going in to the dual against Rider, Minnesota has yet to have its first-team wrestlers in action at the same time. That won’t change on Sunday.

Gophers drop fourth straight dual

No. 18 Minnesota (5-6, 2-4 Big Ten) fell to No. 7 Hawkeyes (11-2, 6-2 Big Ten) 34-7, handing the Gophers their fourth consecutive loss on Friday in Iowa City, Iowa.

Rylee Streifel aims to keep starting position with Gophers wrestling

Sophomore heavyweight Rylee Streifel is in his first year as a starter for the No. 18 Gophers.  Despite a challenging schedule featuring many top ranked opponents, he's made strides. Streifel has compiled a 5-8 dual record and is 8-9 overall. He’s done so while facing some of the best heavyweights in the country, including No. 2 Ohio State’s Kyle Snyder, No. 4 Michigan’s Adam Coon and No. 1 Penn State’s Nick Nevills.

Gophers lose on pin in final match

Sophomore Ben Brancale was pinned in the first period of his match as No. 14 Minnesota (5-5, 2-3 Big Ten) lost to No. 20 Northwestern (8-2, 3-2 Big Ten) 20-18 Sunday afternoon at Maturi Pavilion. The Gophers suffered their third straight loss.

Jake Short and Nick Wanzek share bond on and off the mat

When attending a Minnesota wrestling dual, fans can expect to see redshirt seniors Jake Short and Nick Wanzek slotted next to each other in the lineup at 157 and 164, respectively.  They appear in back-to-back matches much of the time, and the two are close outside the sport as well.

Minnesota dismantles Fresno State at home

The No. 10 Gophers overpowered Fresno State on Sunday afternoon at Maturi Pavilion.  Minnesota won all but two matches en route to a 38-7 victory. As a team, they had two pins, two technical falls and four major decision victories.

Owen Webster finds success with Gophers wrestling after transferring from Augsburg

Sophomore Owen Webster is living his childhood dream with Minnesota, but that was not always the case. Webster transferred to Minnesota after a successful year on the mat with Division III Augsburg. Even though he had a good time at Augsburg, it was always a goal for Webster to wrestle at Minnesota, and now he is a starter in his first year with the team.

Gophers wrestlers struggle in Las Vegas at Cliff Keen Invitational

Minnesota didn’t bring some of its starters to Las Vegas for the Cliff Keen Invitational and by the end of the tournament, it showed. No. 3 Ethan Lizak at 125 was the only Minnesota wrestler to finish in the top-three for their weight, finishing in third place. The next best Gophers wrestlers were No. 9 Nick Wanzek, who finished sixth at 165 and No. 8 Tommy Thorn, who finished seventh at 141.

Nick Wanzek seeks better results at Las Vegas meet

Last December, redshirt senior Nick Wanzek didn’t do as well as he wanted to at the Cliff Keen Invitational, finishing eighth at 174. This Friday and Saturday, he will have a chance to have a better showing, as the Gophers travel to Las Vegas, Nevada for this year’s Cliff Keen Invitational.

Gophers split weekend on road against ranked foes

The No. 6 Gophers (2-1) went on the road this weekend to face two tough tests. Friday night they passed their test by defeating No. 16 South Dakota State (0-1) 20-12.  Minnesota wasn’t as fortunate Sunday with No. 3 Oklahoma State (2-0) handing them a lopsided 30-3 defeat.
