Minnesota dismantles Fresno State at home

The No. 10 Gophers overpowered Fresno State on Sunday afternoon at Maturi Pavilion.  Minnesota won all but two matches en route to a 38-7 victory. As a team, they had two pins, two technical falls and four major decision victories.

Owen Webster finds success with Gophers wrestling after transferring from Augsburg

Sophomore Owen Webster is living his childhood dream with Minnesota, but that was not always the case. Webster transferred to Minnesota after a successful year on the mat with Division III Augsburg. Even though he had a good time at Augsburg, it was always a goal for Webster to wrestle at Minnesota, and now he is a starter in his first year with the team.

Gophers wrestlers struggle in Las Vegas at Cliff Keen Invitational

Minnesota didn’t bring some of its starters to Las Vegas for the Cliff Keen Invitational and by the end of the tournament, it showed. No. 3 Ethan Lizak at 125 was the only Minnesota wrestler to finish in the top-three for their weight, finishing in third place. The next best Gophers wrestlers were No. 9 Nick Wanzek, who finished sixth at 165 and No. 8 Tommy Thorn, who finished seventh at 141.

Nick Wanzek seeks better results at Las Vegas meet

Last December, redshirt senior Nick Wanzek didn’t do as well as he wanted to at the Cliff Keen Invitational, finishing eighth at 174. This Friday and Saturday, he will have a chance to have a better showing, as the Gophers travel to Las Vegas, Nevada for this year’s Cliff Keen Invitational.

Gophers split weekend on road against ranked foes

The No. 6 Gophers (2-1) went on the road this weekend to face two tough tests. Friday night they passed their test by defeating No. 16 South Dakota State (0-1) 20-12.  Minnesota wasn’t as fortunate Sunday with No. 3 Oklahoma State (2-0) handing them a lopsided 30-3 defeat.

Logan Storley: From the mat to the cage

After four years as an All-American wrestler for Minnesota, Logan Storley is taking on a different fighting technique. Storley signed with Bellator MMA in late June, and is prepping for his first match with the club on July 14.

Lizak, Pfarr lead Gophers to seventh place NCAA finish

Brett Pfarr only won one state title while at LeSeur-Henderson High School — making it all the more gratifying when he took the mat to wrestle for an NCAA championship last weekend. The redshirt senior made his first appearance in an NCAA title match at 197 pounds, falling to top-ranked — and Olympic bronze medalist — J’den Cox of Missouri by 8-2 decision. “I made the most of every moment,” said Pfarr. “It was an incredible experience.”

Gophers take fifth at Big Ten Championships

The Gophers wrestling team used performances from some surprise NCAA qualifiers to boost itself to a fifth-place finish at llast weekend’s Big Ten championships. The No. 13 Gophers (7-5, 5-4 Big Ten) entered the weekend as the seventh-ranked Big Ten team in the nation according to Intermat, but thanks to nine NCAA qualifiers, were able to jump Rutgers and Illinois for the fifth spot.

An early upset by Chris Pfarr over a top-ten wrestler set the tone for Minnesota on Sunday against Iowa State. The No. 13 Gophers (7-5, 5-4 Big Ten) didn’t look back and earned bonus points in seven of their eight victories to secure a 40-7 win over the Cyclones in Ames, Iowa.

Mitch McKee learning on the job as a true freshman wrestler

College wrestling is no easy feat — particularly in the Big Ten — but it’s even harder when wrestling as a true freshman. Gophers wrestler Mitch McKee is experiencing that firsthand this year, holding down the starting spot at 133 pounds despite lacking any collegiate experience prior to the season.

Gophers wrestling falls to fourth-ranked Buckeyes

Even wrestling without the number one heavyweight in the country, No. 4 Ohio State proved its ranking on Sunday. The Buckeyes (11-2, 7-2 Big Ten) took down the 12th ranked Gophers (6-5, 5-4 Big Ten) at the Sports Pavilion 24-20, due in large part to the efforts of the other two top-ranked wrestlers on their roster. “It was a really good dual,” said Minnesota head coach Brandon Eggum.

Waiting for their shot: Gophers wrestlers pair with veterans

At Minnesota, wrestling practice consists of a little light jogging, some warm-up somersaults and cartwheels and loud music ranging from “Somethin’ Bout a Truck” to “Gangsta’s Paradise” from mix CDs. In a room where photos of All-Americans and National Champions of the past adorn the walls, today’s Gophers starters work to emulate their predecessors, but they aren’t the only ones working to get better. Meet their practice partners —members of the team who don't typically start in dual matches but compete in open tournaments and practice with the team.

Gophers wrestling team prepare for showdown with Iowa

One of the biggest rivalries in college wrestling will be renewed this weekend, and one team looks to turn the tides on what has been a somewhat one-sided affair. No. 10 Minnesota (6-3, 5-2 Big Ten) hosts No. 3 Iowa (8-2, 4-1 Big Ten) on Sunday at the Sports Pavilion, and the Gophers are looking to grab their first win in the series since the 2013-14 season — a season in which Minnesota placed second in the NCAA Tournament.
