SAFE-U alert system gets updates after Graduate Hotel standoff

Around 5:45 a.m. on Jan. 29, students, their parents and faculty members at the University of Minnesota were alerted of an incident at the Graduate Hotel. The incident turned into a 38-hour standoff between police and a man residing in the hotel. A campus emergency announcement system called SAFE-U Alerts notified students throughout the standoff until it ended in the afternoon on Jan. 30.


University student robbed at gunpoint near Target Express

A University student was robbed at gunpoint at around 10 p.m. on Sunday. The crime occurred on the 600 block of 13th Avenue Southeast near Target Express in Dinkytown. The suspect demanded valuables from the student, and struck her with the butt of the gun until she surrendered her belongings.


Events and engagement add to UMPD’s spring schedule

The UMPD will have an increased presence to monitor Super Bowl-related events and other campus activities. The department will also look to increase engagement by promoting mental health resources and community outreach.
