UMN alumna joins Vikings operations team

The NFL has 14 women currently working in football operations for teams across the league. Kelly Kleine is one of those women. Kleine — a 2013 graduate of the University of Minnesota — was promoted to college scouting coordinator of the Minnesota Vikings earlier this month. “Watching how she interacted with everybody in the football side of it, you knew she had an opportunity to continue to grow,” said general manager Rick Spielman.

Northwoods league helps Gophers in offseason

The season never ends for members of the Gophers baseball program. After the Big Ten Tournament concluded, the Gophers jumped right into more baseball with summer leagues all around the country. Thirteen Gophers compete in the Northwoods League, a summer league in the Midwest and Canada that has had more than 160 players advance to the MLB. “I think for young hitters, it’s a very good league because you get a lot of at-bats,” said Gophers head coach John Anderson.

Bell lands 'dream job' at Minnesota

After winning two consecutive Stanley Cup trophies, Scott Bell took an offer to return to Minnesota. Bell, a Gophers alumnus and former scout for the Pittsburgh Penguins, was named Minnesota’s new assistant coach on June 12.

By coming out, Gophers runners hope to inspire

The bond first developed in high school. Brad Neumann and Justin Rabon met running track for separate teams in Wisconsin. What started as a secret has now been shared with the public by Rabon and Neumann — the two are a couple. The Gophers teammates shared their story with Outsports, a media outlet that publishes articles on gay athletes, and Outsports ran a series of articles on May 30 about their coming out stories and their relationship through track. “That’s why we wrote the stories,” Neumann said.

Gophers baseball readies for MLB draft

Several Gophers baseball players could get their names called at the 2017 MLB Draft, which starts Monday. Left-handed pitcher Lucas Gilbreath, third baseman Micah Coffey, outfielder Alex Boxwell, second baseman Luke Pettersen are all juniors who could be drafted.

Despite missing tournament, Gophers satisfied with season

The Gophers baseball team ended its 36-victory season last week after a loss to the Hawkeyes in the Big Ten Tournament semifinals. Minnesota finished the season third in the Big Ten, with a 15-8 conference record, and missed the NCAA Tournament. “I think if you would have told me at the start of the year that we would have 36 wins and go right down to the last game of the year for the Big Ten Championship, I would’ve taken it,” said assistant head coach Rob Fornasiere. Minnesota won 18 of 23 away games.
