Running back Rodney Smith sat out for a brief period of Saturday’s game against Purdue with a twisted ankle. But that didn’t stop him from having a career day. Smith had 153 yards on the ground and three touchdowns — both career highs — to help Minnesota to a 44-31 victory on Nov.

Gophers football take advantage of Illini turnovers

The Fighting Illini let Saturday’s game against the Gophers slip from their grasp after Minnesota capitalized on several Illinois red zone mistakes. The Gophers scored three times after recovering two Illinois fumbles and a muffed punt to earn the 40-17 victory. “The good thing is ... we’re making points in the red zone, we’re making points off of turnovers,” said head coach Tracy Claeys.


Brooks, Smith excel in new formation

Redshirt sophomore Rodney Smith and sophomore Shannon Brooks have both rushed for more than 400 yards this season. The Gophers have found different ways of getting the two on the field — and one of those ways is by installing a two-halfback formation in the offense. “A lot of times defenses are based on personnel, and at least that’s their starting point,” said offensive coordinator Jay Johnson.


Minnesota edges Rutgers 34-32 in Homecoming game

What should’ve been an easy game for the Gophers against Rutgers Saturday came down to Emmit Carpenter in the last minute of the game. The redshirt sophomore scored a last-minute 28-yard field goal, and Minnesota’s defense hung on for six seconds afterwards to win the Gophers’ homecoming game by a tight score of 34-32.


Offensive line battles multiple injuries for second-straight year

With redshirt senior Jonah Pirsig and junior Vincent Calhoun injured on the Gophers’ offensive line, the team’s other offensive linemen have responded. Junior Connor Mayes, redshirt sophomore Jared Weyler, redshirt sophomore Donnell Greene, redshirt junior Chad Fahning and redshirt freshman Nick Connelly all made appearances in the Maryland game.


Ryba shines as team earns 22 singles victories

Minnesota gained experience at home in the form of 29 total wins over the course of a five-day fall tournament, the United States Tennis Association/ Intercollegiate Tennis Association Central Region Championships. The team had 22 wins in singles and seven wins in doubles.
