Nutritionist Ancel Keys, once the pride of UMN research, presents a fat problem for modern science

In 1957, Ancel Keys and a team of researchers embarked on an ambitious, global mission to reverse the heart attack epidemic through studying diet. Two decades later, Keys’ work was published in a landmark study – the Seven Countries Study. It evaluated a range of diets and was one of the first studies to pin cardiovascular disease, or CVD, to diet. The work helped define national nutrition guidelines today. 

Explosions sound at Graduate Hotel

Two loud explosions were seen and heard at 1:09 p.m. inside the sixth-floor window where the suspect in the Graduate Hotel standoff is currently holed up.

More than 30 hours later, Graduate Hotel situation continues

A woman was released at around 8:30 p.m. from the room in East Bank’s Graduate Hotel where police have been embroiled in a standoff since midnight Sunday.  The woman who left the room is now speaking with investigators as of 9:15 p.m., according to University spokesperson Chuck Tombarge. Police are still talking with a man on the sixth floor of the hotel who police say refused to leave the room after they attempted to serve an arrest warrant against him for an Arizona-based white-collar felony. 

Gas leak prompts evacuation near UMN

A bulldozer ruptured a gas line on 4th Street Southeast at around 3 p.m. Monday, causing evacuations near the University of Minnesota. The Minneapolis Fire Department closed the stretch of road in the Prospect Park neighborhood from 27th to 30th Avenues Southeast on both 4th Street and University Avenue Southeast. The leak from the 12-inch pipe emitted gas into the air and led MFD to evacuate some area buildings.

Man carjacked at gunpoint near Dinkytown McDonald's

A man had his car stolen at gunpoint in Dinkytown Sunday night. Just after 11 p.m., a suspect ran down the man with his own car after he tried to buy the assailant a meal. The victim, 25-year-old, had picked up the man near the Dinkytown McDonald’s after he asked the driver to give him $5 for bus fare, according to a police report.
